Who was he?
Early life:
It seemed Jackson’s strict father gave him a difficult early life. He
didn’t have a happy childhood. Jackson was born on Aug. 29, 1958,
in Gary, Ind., being the 7th of nine children. Five Jackson boys later became
The Jackson Five.
Jackson joined his brothers’ performance at age 5. He made his first solo album
in 1972.
Success:
Jackson released Thriller in 1982, which became a smash hit. The album remained
in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 for 80 consecutive weeks and 37 of those weeks
at the peak position. It was the first album to have seven Billboard Hot 100 top 10.
It is often cited as the best selling album of all time, with worldwide sales between
47 million
and 109 million copies.
On March 25, 1983, Jackson performed live on television special, both with
The Jackson 5 and on his own singing "Billie Jean". Debuting his signature
dance move—the moonwalk. The New York Times said, "The moonwalk that
he made famous is an apt metaphor for his dance style.”
Jackson’s lifetime record sales are about 750 million albums, and with 13
Grammy Awards he has won, makes him one of the most successful entertainers
of all time.
Appearance:
In the mid-1980s, Jackson was diagnosed with vitiligo and lupus, and both
illnesses made him sensitive to sunlight. The treatments he used for his
condition further lightened his skin tone, and, with the application of pancake
makeup to even out blotches, he could appear very pale.
Surgeries and diet are the reasons the structure of his face changed. Jackson lost
weight in the early 1980s because of a change in diet and a desire for
"a dancer's body". Some medical professionals have publicly stated their belief that
the singer had body dimorphic disorder, it is a psychological condition.
Accusation:
In 1993, Jackson was accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy. The boy’s
mom said Jackson didn’t do anything wrong. The accusation made Jackson
addicted to painkiller and cancelled a world tour to promote his album Dangerous.
He reached a settlement with the boy and his family with USD 23 million.
Marriage and family:
Jackson married Lisa Marie. It said the wedding was a ploy to prop up Jackson's
public image in light of prior sexual abuse allegations. Jackson and Presley
divorced less than two years later, remaining friendly.
Then Jackson married Debbie Rowe and had two children. They splitted in 1999.
Jackson has 3 children. The youngest one was known for his brief appearance when
his father held him over the railing of a hotel balcony.
Charity:
In 2000, Jackson was listed in the book of Guinness World Records for his support
of 39 charities, more than any other entertainer or personality.
More controversy:
Jackson was accused of molesting a 13-year-old boy in 2003, as well as conspiring
to abduct the boy. The four-month trial ended in June 2005 with his being acquitted
of all charges. Then Jackson lived a seclusive life.
Come back:
Supported by two billionaires, Jackson would perform 50 concerts at London O2
Arena on July 13.
Conclusion:
Jackson is a singer, dancer, songwriter, best-selling album of all time, a
respected choreographer, producer, author and philanthropist.
Questions for Virtual Class:
Do you think media contributed in Jackson’s set down after the children sexual
abuse scandal?
Do you think he really molested some children or it was just a special love for them?
How did his father influence him?
Q3: Who said she could see Russia from her backyard and Africa is a country?
Answer: Sarah Palin
Resources: http://www.vancouversun.com/news/Palin+says+White+House+still+possibility/1768235/story.html Retrieved July 7th 2009.
What’s this about?
Sarah Palin has resigned as the Governor of Alaska.
“Palin steped down to regain control of her own political script, close advisers
say—former governor is soliciting money for political for political action
committee while undecided about 2012 presidential run”
by Philip Rucker , Washington post.
Why did Palin resign?
Some of the people closest to Palin say she wanted to resign to regain control of
a political script that slipped out of her hands the moment she burst onto the
national stage. She also wanted to shield herself and her family from attacks.
Even though she is now tired of being the governor of the Alaska, of working
with legislature intent on blocking her agenda, of commuting 4 ½ hours from home
to the state capital, of watching her family be near-daily tabloid fodder, on July 4,
Palin strongly suggested that she intended to remain a player in national politics.
Leap from obscurity:
Palin was a first- term governor whose previous political experience was as mayor
of a city of 9,700 when she received the call on her cellphone from McCain.
Her leap from obscurity to the Republican’s national ticiket sent shockwaves
across the US… she made her debut before 30,000 screaming supporters at
the Republican National convention, announced her teenage daughter’s
pregnancy, stumbled through an interview with Kate Couric and saw her caricature
go viral through Tina Fey’s parodies.
Uneasy in the spotlight :
About 15 ethics complaints were filed against Palin or her office, costing the
state nearly USD $300,000 and her family about USD $500,000 in legal expenses.
Her teenage daughter, Bristol and Bristol’s ex-boyfriend Johnston, took their
romantic squabbles to television talk show s and feuded over abstinence and the
care of their infant son.
Even talk show host David Letterman badmouth one of her daughters has
relationship with a baseball star, although later Letterman apologized for it.
Her income potential:
As a Governor, she earns USD $125,000 and her husband Todd Palin USD
$86,000 and USD $5,600 for winning the Iron Dog snowmobile race.
She agreed to a book contract, the terms of which have been kept secret. When
she leaves office, she can have the speaking circuit. One adviser said she could net
at least USD $60,000 a speech.
Conclusion:
Being tired of some staffs, protecting her family from attacks, searching for much
more money or political chance may be the causes for Palin to quit her job
temporarily.
